Al-Qamar

Al-Qamar, "The Moon," is the fifty-fourth surah — 55 verses revealed in Mecca.¹ It opens: "The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two]. And if they see a sign, they turn away and say, 'Passing magic.'"² Ibn Mas'ud reported that in the Prophet's ﷺ lifetime "the moon was split into two parts," and that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Witness this miracle."⁷

What it is about

The surah is about people who see signs and still refuse. It describes the Day when they will "emerge from the graves as if they were locusts spreading, racing ahead toward the Caller," and then tells five brief stories of peoples who were warned. After each comes a pair of refrains: "And how [severe] were My punishment and warning," and "We have certainly made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?"

Key themes

Noah. "They denied Our servant and said, 'A madman.'" Noah calls, "Indeed, I am overpowered, so help," and the gates of heaven open with pouring rain while the earth bursts with springs; he is carried "on a [construction of] planks and nails."³

'Ad, Thamud, Lot and Pharaoh. A cold wind uproots 'Ad "as if they were trunks of palm trees uprooted." Thamud reject their messenger — "Is it one human being among us that we should follow?" — and hamstring the she-camel. Lot's people dispute his warning. Pharaoh's people "denied Our signs, all of them."⁴

A prophecy. "Or do they say, 'We are an assembly supporting [each other]'? [Their] assembly will be defeated, and they will turn their backs [in retreat]."⁵

Everything measured. "Indeed, all things We created with predestination. And Our command is but one, like a glance of the eye... And every small and great [thing] is inscribed." The righteous will be "in a seat of honor near a Sovereign, Perfect in Ability."⁶

Why it matters

Al-Qamar's refrain — "We have certainly made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?" — is one of the Quran's most direct invitations to engage with it, repeated four times. Its opening sign, the splitting of the moon, is one of the miracles attributed to the Prophet ﷺ in sound narrations, and its verse on predestination is a foundation of Islamic belief in divine decree.
